How Finished Sizes Are Decided

The finished size of a patch is the outer edge after cutting, so artwork is prepared with a clear margin around the design rather than with the design touching the cut line. On an embroidered patch the merrowed edge adds a border, while a heat-cut edge trims closer to the shape; both need a few millimetres of clear space so the motif is not clipped. Sending the artwork already sized in millimetres or inches, with the longest side stated, removes the most common source of revision.

Machine framing also shapes the practical limits. The plant runs embroidery machines with different frame capacities, so very large panels use the appropriate frame while small badges run many-up in one frame to make the machine time efficient. That is why per-piece pricing improves when a small badge is ordered in larger quantity: the frame holds more pieces per run. Placement on the finished product is the final constraint. A patch destined for a cap front competes with the seams of the crown, a chest emblem should sit clear of pockets and sleeve seams, and a bag label has to survive the flexing of the material it is sewn onto. Describing the placement when you request the size review helps the production team flag conflicts early, and it usually produces a more sensible recommendation than an arbitrary dimension.
